About
Molino Gregorio Prieto is a rather unique windmill in Valdepeñas, Spain.
Local masons and carpenters built the largest windmill in history in the 1950s. It served as a repository for Gregorio Prieto's publications on the subject of milling.
Prieto, a surrealist painter and sculptor born in Valdepeñas in 1897, bought the original mill, which dated from the 16th century and turned it into a cultural symbol. He used it as a source of inspiration and set up a small museum in which his art and other regional works are exhibited. Today, the mill is dedicated to the legacy of Prieto, who combined his passion for art with his love of local history.
Nowadays, the mill serves as a tourist attraction, offering visitors an insight into the region’s historic windmills and Prieto's artistic work. There are original mill machines on the site, some of which still work and provide an insight into the grain milling of past centuries.
This windmill, which was the first museum in Valdepeñas, is said to be the largest windmill in the world and honors these agricultural monuments that still stand on the plains of La Mancha.
