About

Near the waterfront in Monterey stands one of the strangest sights in fast-food branding: a McDonald’s crowned not with golden arches, but black ones. One of very few in the world with alternative-colored arches.

When the restaurant was built in the 1980s near the historic Cannery Row district, local planners worried the company’s bright yellow arches would clash with the area’s coastal character and historic architecture. The compromise was simple but unusual, swap the gold for black. The result is one of only a handful of McDonald’s locations in the world where the brand’s most famous symbol appears in an entirely different color.

For visitors used to spotting the glowing yellow “M” from miles away, the dark arches feel almost like a disguise- proof that even one of the world’s most recognizable corporate symbols sometimes has to adapt to local character.
