About
Albacete has a rich heritage of cutlery dating back to the 16th century, when the craft began to flourish in the region. The city became known for its high-quality knives, swords and other sharp implements, earning it the title 'City of Knives'. Albacete’s knife industry grew rapidly and became a major economic and cultural force at home and abroad. The city’s skilled craftsmen produced blades of exceptional craftsmanship that were prized for their durability and precision. Today, Albacete remains a center of cutlery production, maintaining its reputation as a global center for fine blades and continuing its centuries-old tradition of excellence in craftsmanship.
Amidst this heritage, the figure of the street knife vendor was born, selling finely crafted blades to locals and travelers alike and embodying the city’s deep-rooted connection to cutlery.
The statue of the cutler in the Plaza del Altozano is a tribute to the city's cutlery heritage. Created in 1960 by the artist Francisco Liza, the statue is a symbol of Albacete's craftsmanship and industry. It was a gift to the city from the National Association of Knife Manufacturers and commemorates the centuries-old tradition of knife-making in Albacete. The statue is a reminder of the city's cultural identity and its enduring connection with the art of cutlery.
