About
Můstek ("Little Bridge") Metro station is named after Na Můstku ("On the Little Bridge"), a street at the edge of Prague's Old Town bordering Wenceslas Square. That street is in turn so named because it had a bridge crossing the Old Town's moat during the Middle Ages. First built in the 13th century, the bridge was later replaced in the 1450s. Located by the St Havel Gate of the Old Town's walls, this bridge was the busiest entrance into the city.
This moat was covered over in 1760, and the bridge was forgotten about for over 200 years until excavations for the Prague Metro in 1976. The bridge was then restored and incorporated into the Metro. Thousands of commuters pass by it every day, as Můstek Metro station is today a hub and entrance to the city centre just as the bridge once was.
