About
This huge, abandoned mine site has many interesting artifacts to explore, including the crown jewel of this location an old 4 stamp mill erected in 1935.
Located only about 2.5 miles and a 5-minute drive from Searchlight. Any vehicle that isn't low-clearance can make it here with no problem. Give yourself an hour or two to explore because there is lots to see.
Many of its original structures are still standing, including the stamp mill, headframe, water tanks, pumps, old engines, old winches, etc. But there are also plenty of ruins (collapsed buildings, miner’s trash, etc.). Really fun to just walk around and see what you discover.
There were three shafts and as you will see numerous open pits. It is reported that assays of the ore were about $11 per ton when gold was going for about $20.67 an ounce. Not very good.....
Interestingly, I read online the road was reinforced by paving over a line of very old cars. I did find one picture which I included here otherwise I couldn't verify that anywhere else online but the one source.
The Oakland Group Mine is located on what was earlier called the Red Cliff mine as early as 1907 and (at least briefly) owned by the Guggenheims. The new Oakland and Bay City groups of claims (including the Berkeley and Cabell) were located in July 1921. Apparently worked mainly between 1922-1935.
