About
Turma da Mônica ("Monica and Friends") by Mauricio de Sousa is considered one of the most enduring Portuguese-language comic book series. Inspired by American comics such as Peanuts, it centers around the everyday life of a group of children in São Paulo, Brazil. Extremely popular in Brazil and Portugal, it has led to de Sousa being nicknamed the "Brazilian Walt Disney," and has been adapted into several TV shows.
As such, it is no surprise that two amusement parks in Brazil have been branded after Turma da Mônica. Children and children-at-heart in Portugal will have to settle for this smaller park and playground, where one can pose with statues of characters from Turma da Mônica and de Sousa's other creations. The park also has a miniature library with various Turma da Mônica books. The city of Amadora is known for one of the largest comic book festivals in Europe, and the park is located on the site of a factory where the festival was once held.
