About
Tarragona, a jewel on Spain’s Costa Dorada, offers a perfect blend of history, culture and coastal charm. Explore the UNESCO-protected Roman ruins, including the amphitheater and the aqueduct, stroll through the medieval old town, and discover the lively Pilon Street.
Pilon Street in Tarragona's historic old town was born out of a series of unfortunate events when residents were faced with structural problems and a fire. To avoid further problems, 46 steel bollards were installed. Over time, the community transformed these plain structures into colorful symbols of creativity and unity, enlivening the street with art and joy. This initiative has turned the street into a vibrant and unique tourist attraction.
Every summer, during the San Agapito Bis festival (which takes place on the first Saturday of July), residents and artists gather to paint the bollards with fresh, imaginative designs, transforming the street into a canvas of creativity. Known as the "Pilons Parade," the event invites local and visiting artists to contribute to keeping the street dynamic and appealing. This festival strengthens community ties and attracts international attention.
The tradition, inspired by the European "cow parade" has evolved into a highly anticipated event. Activities include live music, a raffle and a competition to choose the best bollard, which is then retained for the following year. The event now also includes a "guest bollard", which is painted by an invited club, adding to the cultural significance of the event.
Pilon's Street is an example of the power of art and community spirit to transform an ordinary urban space into an extraordinary symbol of creativity, heritage and local pride.
