About

For centuries, bears have been intertwined with the identity of Madrid. The city’s coat of arms famously depicts a bear reaching up toward a strawberry tree, an image that appears on everything from official seals to souvenirs. Historians debate the exact origins of the symbol, but it likely reflects a time when forests and wildlife surrounded the medieval settlement. Today, the bear remains Madrid’s most recognizable emblem—a reminder that the Spanish capital was once a much wilder place.

One of the city’s lesser-known tributes to this enduring symbol stands at the entrance to the historic Vista Alegre Estate in the Carabanchel district. Known as the Puerta de los Osos (Gate of the Bears), the structure was designed in 1987 by architect Javier Vellés Montoya as part of the estate’s perimeter enclosure. Its red-brick pillars support wrought-iron gates and are crowned by two limestone bears sculpted by Juan Cuevas. Frozen in different poses, the animals seem poised to leap from their pedestals and wander into the gardens beyond.

The gate was inaugurated during the mayoralty of Juan Barranco Gallardo to commemorate the centenary of Vista Alegre’s donation to charitable institutions in 1887, during the regency of María Cristina of Austria. Although it now serves as an entrance to educational centers housed within the estate, the gateway remains one of the most distinctive features of the sprawling historic property.

With its rocket-like brick pinnacles, elegant ironwork, and pair of watchful bears surveying passersby, the Puerta de los Osos is both monument and curiosity. Most visitors come to admire the grand palaces and gardens hidden behind the walls of Vista Alegre. Few expect to be greeted by Madrid’s symbolic guardians standing high above the entrance.
