About
Founded in 1950, the Quan Mei Theatre is a historic second-run cinema in the Central Western District of Tainan City, once frequented by prominent filmmaker Ang Lee during his formative years.
The most unique feature of this cinema is its vibrant movie posters, all hand-painted by master artist Yan Jhen-fa, often considered the very last of his kind. His brilliant brushstrokes give a nostalgic, comfortable, artisanal feel even to the latest Hollywood blockbusters, full of love for the art of cinema.
Sadly, the theater closed down in March 2025, but rest assured, there is a plan to restore it to its former glory and reopen it. In the meantime, the last four posters by Master Yan – Joker: Folie à Deux, Inside Out 2, Venom: The Last Dance, and Transformers: One – remain unfading on the façade alongside other paintings.
