About

Along the Mississinewa River in Peru, Indiana, is a set of seven limestone pillars that reach some 25 feet tall. This area has long been considered a sacred space for the Miami people of Indiana, who have called these lands home for hundreds of years.

The stone pillars were shaped by centuries of erosion as water carved out tall columns and a set of alcove-like spaces. According to their history, the Miami "often held council meetings and other activities within these isolated rooms." Today, the tribe owns the land on the south bank of the river, where they conduct Long House ceremonies and host heritage celebrations.
