About
At Plummer Park in West Hollywood, a pink granite pyramid stands in honor of Soviet soldiers who fought and died on the Eastern Front during World War II.
The reason for its presence is simple: many Russian veterans of World War II immigrated to West Hollywood during the Cold War, fleeing persecution and seeking a better life in America. Over time, they built a strong Russian-speaking community in the area.
The memorial, however, has not been without controversy. When it was unveiled by the Russian community on May 9, 2005 protesters objected, arguing that it honored Stalin’s regime. It was vandalized in 2011, but as of August 2025, it still stands as a dedication to the Soviets who fought and died in World War II.
