About
According to Japanese legend, Takachiho Gorge located in Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyushu is the place where the deity of Heaven Ninigi-no-mikoto descended to earth to establish the line of Japanese emperors. Although it shares that claim with Mount Takachiho-no-mine in Kirishima National Park, the Gorge itself has become well-know for its stunning scenery.
The Gorge was formed around 100,000 years ago when Mount Aso, a nearby active volcano, erupted lava into the Gokase River. The striking cliffs on either side of the Gorge, which are as much as 100 meters high in some points, formed as a result of the rapid cooling of the lava from the eruption, and the layers of basalt rock resemble dragon scales.
The most popular way to view the narrow Gorge, only 3 meters wide in parts, is from the river itself. Visitors can rent boats and paddle on the usually emerald water to see the stunning formations up close. Paddling down the river, visitors will also be treated to the sight of the 17 meter high Minainotaki waterfall, which cascades down from the sheer face cliffs. It is also possible to view the Gorge from above by following the paved trail which leads to Takachiho Shrine.
At Takachiho Shrine, townspeople and visitors gather to watch the sacred night dance “yokagura” performed every night. The dance is comprised of three acts and reenacts Japanese myths. The Gorge is illuminated at night from May to November.
