About
The combination of craft beer and gastro-pub grub is enough of a draw on its own, but this microbrewery has even more to offer: It’s housed in historic Union Station, which is said to be haunted.
Built in 1927 with a bomb shelter and tunnels underneath, Union Station (and its precursor, Union Depot) has quite the history. The stations have seen many famous travelers, including baseball great Babe Ruth and presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and Abraham Lincoln. You could say Abe came full circle on the site. Our 16th president traveled through the Depot on his way to the White House as president-elect, and then, four years later, returned as his funeral train passed through to his final resting place in Illinois.
One young traveler wasn’t famous when she arrived at Union Station, but she has since become an Erie legend. A young girl named Clara was traveling with her parents. As they climbed the stairs to the upper platform, her father accidentally knocked into her with his luggage. The little girl went flying down a flight of marble steps to her death. Yet some say that was not the end of Clara. As the myth goes, her spirit haunts the site to this day. If you want to hear more about the station’s otherworldly history (washed down with the aptly-named Apparition Amber Ale), check out the Brewerie’s Haunted History Tours. They happen every April and October in—appropriately enough—the deep tunnels beneath the restaurant.
