About

The Brutus Stone in Totnes, England has a spurious connection to the ancient explorer who is said to have founded Britain.

Not to be confused with the London Stone, another ancient rock supposedly associated with Brutus, the Totnes stone is a small granite boulder that is currently embedded in a pedestrian walkway. According to local tradition, the stone was the first thing Brutus stepped on when he disembarked from his ship, saying, "Here I stand and here I rest. And this town shall be called Totnes." This lore is likely incorrect however as the stone sits well inland from where any historic tide would have reached.
