About
Hidden beneath the Franklin Street Bridge in downtown Houston, this humble brick arch is all that remains of the Donnellan Crypt—an early family tomb sealed into the structure of a modern overpass. Built in the mid-1800s, it once held members of the Donnellan family, including a young man tragically killed by a leftover Civil War cannonball he tried to disarm.
When the bridge was constructed in the early 1900s, the vault was emptied, but the brickwork was preserved and quietly built into the bayou embankment. Today, it’s easy to miss—just a strange alcove above the waterline—but to those who know where to look, it’s a ghostly fragment of Houston’s hidden past.

The crypt is best viewed from the south side of the Franklin Street Bridge, facing Buffalo Bayou. Look just above the waterline—what seems like a forgotten drainage hole is actually a historical tomb. It's easiest to spot from a boat tour or by walking the bayou trail under the bridge (when accessible). There’s no plaque or marker, so bring a sharp eye—and maybe a flashlight if you're exploring at dusk. Mosquito repellant also highly encouraged.
