About
Unless you are a really tall person, you are not likely to be taller than a traffic light—except if you are in the center of Tarragona, a city well known for its Roman past and breathtaking beauty.
Among its many attractions, Tarragona boasts ancient ruins, including an amphitheater that overlooks the Mediterranean, but it is also home to a rather peculiar modern feature: some of the shortest traffic lights in Spain.
La Font del Centenari, located right in the heart of La Rambla Nova, is considered one of the most beautiful fountains in Tarragona. Yet, despite its elegance and historical significance, what most visitors remember after seeing it are the unusually short traffic lights positioned at either end of the fountain. These tiny yet functional signals regulate the flow of cars in the roundabout that encircles this landmark, becoming an unexpected point of curiosity for those passing through.
Why are they so short? Nobody really knows for sure. Some speculate that their reduced height ensures they remain visible to drivers waiting in the roundabout, while others believe they were intentionally designed not to obstruct the view of the fountain. Regardless of the reasoning, these miniature traffic lights remain an endearing mystery, adding to Tarragona’s charm.
Whether they hold the title of the shortest traffic lights in Spain remains uncertain, but they certainly contribute to the city’s blend of history and modern quirks. Just as Tarragona harmonizes its Roman past with contemporary life, these tiny traffic lights serve as a unique reminder that even small details can leave a lasting impression.
