About

Although nothing to do with Norse mythology Thor's cave has a fascinating history, fantastic views and some great rock climbing.

Thor's Cave is high up on the side of the Manifold Valley in the Peak District National Park in England. It can clearly be seen from the valley floor and as well as the obvious main entrance there is a smaller one called the west widow.  The cave has been excavated by archaeologists and has shown both evidence of occupation, from the paeliolithic period through to the time of the Roman occupation of Britain, and evidence of use as a burial site. At least 7 skeletons have been discovered. Also animal remains, stone tools, pottery, amber beads and brass objects have been found.

The public can enter freely and the steep climb up a path which is now provided with steps ( by Park authorities) is rewarded with magnificent views.

The cave has a massive cave entrance but is not particularly extensive so it does not attract much interest from cavers (spelunkers). However, inside the cave are some short but spectacular rock climbing routes (https://adamlong.photoshelter.com/image/I0000WOHxhyAjs5A ) some of which are considered absolute classics. If rock climbing can ever be considered a spectator sport then this is a great venue.

It seems that there is no real link between this cave and Norse tradition with the name Thor coming from a corruption of the word  "tor" meaning  hilltop.
