About

Hidden in a section of limestone above Dovedale lies Reynard's Cave. The small cave is situated behind a large natural rock arch and the combination is one of the Peak District's most distinctive geoligical features. Excavations in the late 1950s suggested that the cave was used as a spot of temporary refuge during the Neolithic, Roman and Medieval periods. Coins, pottery and other fragments were found from these eras.

The cave is also a roosting site during the Winter months for bats. There was a very interesting discovery during 2013 excavation where a tooth was found at the rear of the cave, thought to belong to a brown bear. Archaeologists were unable to determinte how it had ended up in the place it was found. The tooth was dated from scientists at the University of Oxford and dated to be from the Mesolithic period.
