About
The Wałśniak Oak is a remarkable over 200-year-old natural monument growing in an extraordinary location – literally in the middle of the road in the village of Wałsnów, Orońsko municipality. This majestic oak with a circumference of 514 cm has become an icon of the region and a symbol of local community determination. The Wałśniak has survived over two centuries, witnessing the history of the Szydłowiec region. In 2021, the tree faced a serious threat when local authorities decided to cut it down, citing residents' safety concerns.
The cutting decision sparked fierce protests from residents and the “Eko” Orońsko Association, who organized a rescue campaign, including fundraising for studies and expert assessments to prove the tree's natural heritage value. The local community united in their fight to preserve this exceptional tree.
The Wałśniak Oak stands out not only for its size and age, but primarily for its unique positioning – the road literally splits around its trunk, with traffic signs placed right next to its base. This is the only such place in the region where nature and infrastructure coexist in such harmonious fashion. The Wałśniak Oak represents both the resilience of nature and the power of community activism in preserving local heritage.
