First proposed to the town by Polish professor Krzysztof Wojciechowski and designed by Armenian sculptor Mihran Hakobyan, the monument dedicated to Wikipedia was first unveiled in 2014.
The sculpture is crafted from fiber and resin, and cost a pretty penny. Around $14,000 was needed to build the monument, most of which was provided by the regional government. It was seen as a way for officials to highlight the town as an academic enclave. The monument features four figures carrying the Wikipedia globe. There is an inscription along the base of the statue paying homage to the thousands of anonymous editors from around the world who have helped build Wikipedia.
