Around the world, pockets of desert-like terrain hide in unusual spots. In Alaska, mounds of golden sand spill across a plot of Arctic forest. Poland boasts a human-made desert slowly being reclaimed by the forest, and in Greece, a patch of shifting sand sits between two of the lush island’s extinct volcanoes.
