About

Australia has Bondi-to-Coogee, Ireland the Wild Atlantic Way and Oaxaca has "A Possible Dream." This dramatically named coastal walk starts at one of Puerto Escondido's best-known beaches and ends in a colorful lookout celebrating its founder's perseverance.

Local businessman and condo mogul Efrén Bruciaga conceived the idea of a walkway that would straddle the dramatic cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean after seeing a similar walk in Monte Carlo. In the early 1990s, he reached out to the local government for assistance in making it a reality, to which the authorities responded saying this was "an impossible dream." Undeterred, Bruciaga gathered around 200 of his construction workers and started building.

The walkway only took about three months to be completed, and it opened in 1992. Bruciaga and his crew left a little something for the haters at the end. On the arched lookout that is the walk's terminus there is a simple plaque that reads "Un Sueño Posible," a possible dream.

Overlooking the deep blue ocean under a warm tropical sun, with the smell of the saltwater in the air and surfers riding the Mexican Pipeline in the horizon, one can be forgiven for dreaming.

Know Before You Go

The walk begins off a small street past the Southern end of Bahía Principal beach and is approximately one mile (about 1.6 kilometers) long. Caution is necessary while walking along the path, as some sections are prone to be battered by the waves while others have fallen into disrepair.
