For all those who are tired of staying in traditional hotels or campgrounds, a new opportunity for accommodations may soon become available: a decommissioned missile silo located on the outskirts of Wilson, Kansas.
The Atlas Ad Astra Adventure Resort is the brainchild of Matthew Fulkerson, a local adventurer and former contestant on the TV show American Ninja Warrior. Matthew grew up with an interest in abandoned Department of Defense structures that was piqued most directly by Subterra Castle, a since-closed bunker that was turned into a novelty home in nearby Eskridge.
When that site was forced to close, he began focusing on building out a similar concept at a former Atlas F Missile Silo located in Wilson. This silo was one of approximately 70 Atlas F missile bases located across the country. It was active from 1959-1965, at which point it was scuttled and decommissioned.
Today, Matthew, accompanied by his Missile Silo dog, lives and works on-site. His ambitious plans include building an obstacle course, spa, wellness retreat, and rental suites on the grounds of the silo. Visitors will be led through the blast doors, touring the future site of the accommodations, the equipment room, and the 176-foot deep silo that once housed an intercontinental ballistic missile.

As of 2023, the site remains very much a work in progress and an active construction area. However, the grounds are open both as a campground and RV park and for tours of the missile silo. Visit the company website to book an opportunity.
