Bungalow Heaven

At the turn of the last century, fanciful Victorian architecture began to fall out of favor in America, as the middle class expanded and began looking for affordable, well-constructed housing. One of the responses to changing tastes was the American Arts and Crafts Movement, and one of the most famous and loved expressions of the movement is the Craftsman Bungalow.

With their iconic low-pitched rooflines, overhanging eaves, hand-crafted wood and stone-work, and porches, the Craftsman Bungalows provided solid, durable, even graceful shelter to generations of Americans.

Pasadena is fortunate to have one of the world’s best collections of bungalow homes, and many of them are located in Bungalow Heaven, a city district in which 800 Craftsman bungalows were built between 1900 and 1930. This remarkable concentration of bungalows has been well preserved, and the leafy, tree-lined district is on the National Register of Historic Places.
