About
The fresh spring mix of sweet, floral, citrusy orange blossoms enlivens each cobblestoned step through Valencia’s old town. Along these medieval streets, your eyes won’t miss the plethora of menu boards outside cafés and restaurants, each one touting Agua de Valencia, the city’s signature cocktail made with fresh Valencia oranges, cava, gin, and vodka.
You can’t miss the hype.
But one corner is unlike the rest: Café Sant Jaume, a laid-back drinking spot in the El Carmen neighborhood. Housed in a historic 19th-century building that once served as an apothecary, the cafés vintage tin ceiling, handcrafted wood bar, and expansive back shelves now showcase potions for modern-day libations.
Seating inside is limited, so expect to sit at one of the outdoor communal tables, where pitchers of Agua de Valencia arrive with a wooden spoon for stirring and serving. Choose your pitcher size, there are options for one, two, three, or four people. Something for everyone.
While waiting for drinks (and people watching), your thoughts may drift to the past. It’s said that Hemingway spent time in this neighborhood, and that creative energy lingers in the air. You won’t want to leave. Head downstairs for a quick bathroom break, and you’ll pass crates overflowing with fresh, ripe Valencia oranges.
Here, Mother Nature has a sweet hand in elevating your spirits.
