About

For nearly three decades, Gruta 77 has been a haven for Madrid’s rock and roll faithful. Right in the heart of Carabanchel, this legendary concert venue and rehearsal space has given punk rockers, and other musical misfits a place to gather, play loud, and keep the underground alive. But its days may be numbered: Gruta 77 is expected to close for good at the end of 2026.

Its façade has also served as a temporary archive of Madrid’s disappearing commercial landscape. In 2022, Gruta 77 became home to Hijas de Rojas, an installation of rescued vintage shop signs recovered from businesses that had vanished from the city’s streets. Among them was the blue-and-white sign from Bar Lozano, a Malasaña institution from 1975 until 2018. Collected and preserved by the collective Paco Graco, the signs ended up transforming the façade of a punk-rock venue into a tribute to the families and small businesses that once defined Madrid’s neighborhoods.

Carabanchel is now undergoing a transformation of its own. A scarcity of homes and rising property prices are steadily reshaping the barrio, while new residents, businesses, and developments accompany the slow advance of gentrification. For longtime locals, Gruta 77 represents more than a concert venue: it is part of Carabanchel’s cultural landscape. Its farewell in 2026 would mark the loss of another piece of the barrio’s alternative identity.
