About

This small museum tucked away in a narrow four-story building in Burgos' Old Town covers an unusual theme: the history of books.

The collection is divided into four sections chronicling the evolution of the printed word: the origin of books, the Enlightened Middle Ages, the Guttenberg universe, and the 19th and 20th centuries. It displays facsimiles of some of the greatest books ever published, but one would be hard-pressed to tell them from the original.

Though the museum is based in an old building, the interior is unexpectedly modern and the displays are very imaginatively presented. Visitors usually start at the top floor and work downwards, from the oldest writing devices such as papyrus scrolls to the digital books of the present day.

On the outside of the building, to the rear, look out for a delightful bronze statue of a small boy reading a book on the window ledge.

Closed on Sundays and Mondays. Admission €2.50. There are some English labels but the majority of information is in Spanish. There is an app to overcome this but even a minimal amount of Spanish would be a great help.
