About
The healing effects of the waters of this fountain were first reported in the 12th century.
Located in the Cementerio Sacramental de San Isidro de Madrid, the Fuente de San Isidro owes its name to Saint Isidore the Farmer, patron saint of Madrid. The story goes that St. Isidore first miraculously made the waters flow in this spot by sticking his cane in the ground to give his master Iván de Vargas a drink.
After its powers were first reported, peasants began going to drink the water that flowed from the fountain as it was considered miraculous. Empress Isabella of Portugal wanted to test the benefits that the people of Madrid attributed to the water and, after drinking from the spring, Emperor Charles V and his son, the future monarch Philip II, recovered from their illnesses. Grateful for the healing of her husband and son, Queen Elizabeth ordered the construction of a new hermitage in honor of the Saint in 1528.
The waters of the fountain are still blessed every year prior to the 15th of May, the day of festivities for the city's patron saint. On the day, people gather to collect the water and benefit from its miraculous properties.
