This monument is designed to represent the Soviet cosmonaut and the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin. The structure stands as a beautiful example of Modernist architecture between concrete blocks of the Winogrady district. The monument was created by the Polish sculptor Jerzy Sobociński and stands around 32-feet (10-meters) in height. The obelisk is composed of concrete with Gagarin’s sculpture on top.
The entire area features a space theme as this gem is located at the edge of Gagarin Park, next to the prefabricated housing known as the Cosmonaut estate.
The unveiling took place on November 7, 1977, and was done by the secretary of the Polish United Workers’ Party, Jerzy Zasada.
