Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has caused views of chocolate factories to become rather fantastical, with visions of chocolate rivers, sugar-spun landscapes, and perhaps a rogue oompa-loompa. Most real-life confectionaries are decidedly lower on whimsy, but there are a few noteworthy exceptions. One of these is the Lindt Home of Chocolate, a part of the Kilchberg chocolate factory just outside of Zurich

Switzerland’s famous chocolate-producer set up the visitor center and museum in 2020 with the hope of capturing some of that childlike wonder. As soon as they enter, visitors are greeted by the sight of the world’s largest chocolate fountain, a 30-foot-high waterfall of 1,500 liters of chocolate that appears to flow from a whisk suspended in air onto a Lindor truffle.

After admiring the fountain, visitors can explore 65,000 square feet of interactive exhibitions. The museum whisks participants through the steps of the Lindt chocolate-making process, starting with the production of cocoa beans and leading all the way to the mixing of flavors. The Chocolateria, where you can craft your own personalized confections, is especially popular. And of course, there are several testing stations throughout the exhibition to test your restraint.

Know Before You Go

Tickets for the museum tend to sell out, so it is suggested to book them well ahead. There is also a gift shop selling all kinds of chocolate from Lindt.
