About

The Loch Long Torpedo Range sits derelict on the banks of Loch Long after having been in operation from 1912 to 1986. The remnants of the range have a ghostly presence and also contain some interesting modern graffiti. The old buildings and pier sit on the western shore of the loch, opposite the small village of Arrochar.

Activity at the range was most prevalent during World War II when more than 12,000 torpedoes were launched from the site in 1944. These were launched directly from tubes underneath the range or from submarines that would dock at the range. Targets were set up in the loch, allowing those stationed at the base could practice their skills.

As technology progressed, the range became obsolete and was left abandoned. A large fire in 2007 further desecrated the structure. Despite these incidents, the concrete has stood strong. From the range, there is also a great view of the surrounding landscape not visible from the roadside.

Know Before You Go

You can unofficially park on the side of the road where the entrance to the range has been blocked off by concrete blocks. It's a short walk down the decaying road to reach the station.

Be aware of rotting wood and rough concrete while you explore. The area is also a popular diving site and a number of decommissioned test torpedoes can be found on the floor of the loch.
