About

Nestled amidst the streets of Malden, Massachusetts, an architectural gem conceals a world of operatic wonders. The historic opera house even has its own phantom.

Originally built in the late 1860s by Wilbur F. Haven, this stately mansion, with its ornate façade and intricate original details, is characteristic of the Second Empire period. When he commissioned the house, Haven was a well-off Boston hardware merchant. Later railroad contractor William Ferguson lived in the home. The home was listed on the National Register of Historic Homes in 1992.

Formerly a part of the city's famed "Doctor's Row," this remarkable mansion is the sole survivor from its heyday. Previously utilized as commercial offices and later as a funeral home in the early 1900s, the house underwent a remarkable transformation in early 2023 when the Mystic Side Opera Company took up residence.

As the company began converting the mansion into an opera house and venue for intimate concerts, an unexpected presence made itself known. The opera's General Director captured a ghostly figure on video, and soon after, the spirit began revealing its presence within the house. From ghostly footsteps to mysteriously illuminated lights (prompting the staff to implement the tradition of leaving a "ghost light" on), the enigmatic presence of the house's resident phantom has become an integral part of the opera experience, both for guests and performers alike.

Mystic Side Opera House in the heart of Malden offers a unique backdrop for an evening of artistic brilliance with an unexpected touch of mystery. The beauty of opera intertwined with the captivating history of the mansion, creates an extraordinary experience not to be missed.
