About
Dating back to the 1750s, this beautiful cemetery resides a short distance from the sea in Georgetown, Penang. It was the first cemetery in Penang and Captain Francis Light, the founder of colonial Penang was buried here in 1794. After almost 100 years of complete neglect, it was finally listed as a Heritage Site and taken care of by the Penang Heritage Trust in 1994.
Today, only a few curious travelers can be found walking the cemetery, or perhaps someone tracking down a distant relative's foreign resting place. There are plenty of ex-pats and foreign workers buried here who never made it back to England. Interestingly enough, 12 Chinese Christians are buried here who fled the Boxer Rebellion.
It's a perfect enclosure to ward off the midday sun under a tree after walking around reading the inscriptions on the various headstones. The cemetery offers a nice change of pace for those done exploring the cramped alleys of this fantastic city.
