About
Mumbai’s iconic Marine Drive is a curved sea-facing promenade in the Back Bay area. Along the promenade, there are two stone pillars at the waterfront. These stone obelisks form a heritage structure called the Parsi Gate.
The Parsi Gate was built in 1915 by tycoon Pallonji Mistry and philanthropist Bhagojisheth Kheer, predating the construction of Marine Drive, which was constructed between 1920 and 1940.
These obelisks are made of Malad stone and have Zoroastrian motifs carved on them. The structure has been built to honour Avan Yazata, the water deity of the Parsi Irani Zoroastrian community. The deity is worshipped by the Zoroastrian community members, particularly during the Holy Month of Avan, and prayers are offered near water bodies.
