About

The Poolsmoor prison is a decades old maximum-security prison that hosted a variety of people, including Nelson Mandela after his release from Robben Island. With over 7000 inmates it does not appear in most people's travel itinerary, but perhaps surprisingly it should because it hosts an (in)famous restaurant called Pollsmoor Restaurant "Idlanathi" (or Zulu for "come eat with us").

The restaurant, which is open for breakfast and lunch, is not only special for its location but also for the staff, as it is fully run by inmates close to the end of their sentence, with the idea to provide them with useful skills for functioning in the outside world. There are also guards nearby so there is virtually no danger, but despite that it is still an exciting place to visit.

The place looks like a canteen and is in no way fancy, but despite that the food and service are generally good because the staff is training to work at higher-end places. Also because none of the staff get paid, the prices are incredibly low, with large steaks for less than 100 Rand.

Know Before You Go

It is advised to make a reservation when coming with large groups, but not necessary otherwise.

When at the gate, inform the guard that you are here to visit the restaurant. They will take the drivers details and the car's license plate.

Photography is not allowed inside the premises. In the restaurant you can make pictures of yourself and your food, but it is strictly forbidden to photograph the guards or inmates, and you risk losing your phone if you break this rule.

Tipping is not allowed, you can pay by cash or card. Prices are low even for Africa. There is no alcohol.
