About
Near the center of Chișinău, weathered, massive gates rise among the last visible remnants of the old Republican Stadium. Built in the early 1950s, during Moldova’s Soviet years, the stadium once drew huge crowds for football games, parades, and other state-organized events. For decades, it was the most prominent sports venue in the country.
By 2007, the stadium was in poor shape and demolished, but the entrance gates and surrounding wall, now covered in murals, were left standing. The roughly 12-acre (5-hectare) site was abandoned, and over time, plants and trees slowly took over. What was once a busy space turned into a wild patch of urban forest in the middle of the city.
The gates now stand at the edge, unused, and mostly forgotten. Faded tin signs reading КАССА (Ticket Office) still cling above the abandoned booths, and faint Soviet stars, cast in concrete relief, remain. The grand entryway, designed in a neoclassical style with a central arch flanked by tall columns and rectangular bays, has endured.
In 2024, Moldova’s Parliament approved plans for one of the world’s largest U.S. embassies on the former stadium site. The Soviet-era gates will be restored and preserved as the area takes on new diplomatic and civic roles. Their survival leaves a Cold War relic at the boundary where East and West converge in the heart of Moldova.

The gates, accessible 24/7, are located in Strada Tighina, three blocks or about an eight-minute walk from Chișinău's main thoroughfare, Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt Boulevard.
The forest beyond the gates is unmarked and overgrown. Feral dogs are often seen, and some unhoused individuals use the area for shelter. For safety reasons, especially after dark, it’s best not to venture too far in.
There are also rear gates you can see, though they’re smaller than the main entrance. Along the outside of the northern sections of the surrounding wall, murals add some color to the concrete.
