In 1835, after two successive attempts at surveying failed to produce an amicable result, Ohio and Michigan went to war over the Toledo Strip. No one was hurt or killed, but several shots were fired when two hostile militias made their way to the Toledo Strip to secure it by force. Stevens T. Mason, the territorial governor of Michigan, personally led 250 armed volunteers to against the Ohioans.

However, Wisconsin was the true loser in the Toledo War. Because of Michigan's loss of the Toledo Strip, the state was granted the land in the Upper Peninsula, an area that had previously been surveyed as part of the state of Wisconsin.
