About

Get up close and personal with American bison at this wildlife preserve in northeastern Indiana. Although these giant herbivores were once pushed to the brink of extinction by the United States government, careful conservation efforts have helped stabilize populations.

This particular herd consists of around 250 animals, which roam free over 400 acres designed to simulate their natural habitat. Unlike a zoo, this gives visitors the chance to see these charismatic megafauna behave much as they would in the wild. The best time to visit is in mid-May, when around 40 to 50 calves are born each year.

In addition to learning about the bison, visitors can learn more about the history of the Native Americans prior to the arrival of European colonists. There is also a gift shop with souvenirs, as well as bison meat and snacks for purchase.
