Colin Dickey

Joined Atlas Obscura in 2011

I'm the author of five books of nonfiction, including Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places; The Unidentified: Mythical Monsters, Alien Encounters, and Our Obsession with the Unexplained; and Under the Eye of Power: How Fear of Secret Societies Shapes American Democracy. I host a monthly Experience for Atlas Obscura called Monster of the Month: each month we look at the cultural, social, political, and esoteric history of a different cryptid, ghost, alien, supernatural monster, or other piece of folkloric weirdness. From 2023 to 2025 I also wrote a column for Atlas Obscura, entitled "Eerie America."
