Matt Burke

Joined Atlas Obscura in 2025

For the past two decades, Matthew Burke has traveled around the world writing about some of the most pressing global issues—energy in Southeast Asia, deforestation in Uganda—and turning them into more than $150 million of business. Yet Germany remains his first cure for wanderlust. In his youth, he completed did a school exchange in Westfalia, lived on the Danube in Bavaria, and taught on the Baltic Sea in the former East Germany. He holds a bachelors in German from Georgetown and an MBA from Duke. In his free time, he volunteers as a mentor to prepare exchange students for their year abroad. He lives in Virginia with his wife and daughter.
