Modern urban architecture across the world is often defined by grey buildings with glass panes. And most of these places look the exact same across countries and continents. However, over the course of history, cities had different architectural styles that gave every place a unique defining flavor.
Some houses had wooden overhangs which loomed over the narrow lanes; some buildings had stone spires with fascinating gargoyles, while others had artistic balconies that overlooked the thoroughfare below. Public buildings such as libraries, municipal corporations, banks, courts, cinemas, universities, secretariats, government departments had unique architectural elements which made them stand out.
In the first half of the twentieth century came Art Deco. It was stylish and classy. It had an instant appeal and became a rage across the world. Defined by sharp geometrical shapes and futuristic designs, people immediately fell in love with it and soon, a lot of homes and public buildings were made with this architectural style.

Over the years, during my urban explorations of Pune and Mumbai, I have come across many such Art Deco buildings which have dotted the landscapes of these cities. In this post, I will be talking about some of the Art Deco buildings that have fascinated me.
In Pune, right across the historic Vishrambaug Wada, there is a huge Art Deco building that towers over the bustling square. One of the many criss-crossing lanes of the Tulshibaug market area goes past the building’s entrance. The footpath on the other side of the street is a great spot to take a picture of the building in all its geometrical glory.
Another fine example is on Jangli Maharaj Road, where right opposite Pataleshwar Caves, there is another fascinating Art Deco building which houses a restaurant, a lodge and other shops.

Lakshmi Road in the centre of Pune is lined with many amazing Art Deco buildings. Most of them are commercial complexes. A few of them are residences too. One such building has some very interesting central vertical elements, a key feature in Art Deco architecture.

Just a few blocks away, there is another building with a fascinating Art Deco mural. I am yet to discover what interesting story the mural symbolizes.

Similarly, right across Pune Railway Station, there is another Art Deco building.

In Mumbai, the iconic Eros cinema is located in a beautiful Art Deco structure. The tower of the building is easily recognizable. A short distance away, on Marine Drive, stands another popular Art Deco building with rounded corners. In fact, a lot of houses and buildings in this area are Art Deco.

Some distance away, near the Kala Ghoda area, there are Egyptian motifs on a commercial building made in Art Deco style.

Most of these buildings were built during the 1920s and 1930s. That was when Art Deco was at its peak. Across the world, these buildings are reminiscent of that time period. Gazing at these buildings, I am reminded of film noir all the time. A classic bygone era, indeed!
