About
In central Aarhus stands a sculpture of the bodybuilding movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger hugging a copy of himself. The 7-ft-1-inch (2.15 meters) work was created by Danish artist Søren Thilo Funder in hard plastic and resin. It was commissioned for a 2021 local art exhibition exploring extreme sports and is the only piece from the show kept on permanent display.
The artwork is titled “Dutch’n’Dutch (What the hell are YOU? What the hell ARE you?).” The name comes from the 1987 film Predator, in which Schwarzenegger’s character, Dutch, says the line to an extraterrestrial hunter called the Predator. The alien then repeats the words back to him, creating a strange echo.
By showing Schwarzenegger with his double, the piece turns the film’s repeated dialogue into a physical doubling. It also points to the merging of the real person Schwarzenegger with the collection of cinematic characters he has played over the years.
Know Before You Go
Dutch’n’Dutch is freely accessible 24/7 on the lawn (or “sculpture park,” as the art hall calls it) in front of Kunsthal Aarhus, just a 10-minute walk from the central station.
