About

This unique formation was crafted over thousands of years due to a unique weathering process known as tafoni. It has created a honeycomb pattern that is a marvelous sight. From afar, it appears as though a skull has fallen from the sky. Standing next to this natural wonder certainly will make visitors feel small.

It is unclear of the etymology of the word "Tafoni." It may be Italian in origin for the word for holes, taffoni, or perforations, tafonare.  Also, it could be derived from the Greek word for tomb, taphos.

These geological formations can be found throughout the world,  but are inclined to be in areas that are intertidal, consisting of semi-arid and dry conditions. The variations of levels of freezing and drying of moisture helps create what looks like a honeycomb effect.

Know Before You Go

One can park at the Skagg's Point vista point. With you facing the vista, turn to your left and walk about 50 yards to the entrance of the park. The hike to the monolith is about two and a half miles.

Wear sensible shoes as the trek is on uneven, sloped surfaces. Be aware that these trails are popular with off road cyclists, especially on weekends.  Dogs should be kept on leashes and Mountain Lions have been sighted.
