About
In the courtyard of central Helsinki's oldest surviving wooden house, a rough-hewn cube of reddish granite sits low in the gravel, flat-topped enough to double as a seat. For decades it was the favorite perch of Alexander Wickholm, the fire captain (ruiskumestari, literally "hose master"), who liked to smoke his pipe there while keeping an eye on the yard.
Wickholm died in 1896. Nearly three decades later, in 1923, his granddaughter Martta had the stone moved near his grave at a cemetery across town. Almost immediately, the house began to misbehave. Tenants reported banging on the attic stairs and shutters that slammed themselves shut at night, loud enough that several residents moved out rather than endure it.
The disturbances didn't stop until the stone was eventually hauled back to its original spot in the yard.
Today, The Burgher's Home operates as a small museum - and the ghost, it turns out, still has opinions. Staff say activity flared up again after the museum's 2021 history of the house described Wickholm as "grumpy". Since then, mornings have occasionally brought a small trail of mischief: rugs twisted out of place, an old flatiron turned the wrong way, and kitchen utensils rearranged overnight.
Nobody at the museum seems particularly eager to dismiss the stories - not even the guide who walks visitors through the courtyard every day, who admits she wouldn't spend the night in the house.
The block, meanwhile, remains exactly where it was brought back, long ago. According to legend, Wickholm still sits on it - pipe in hand.

Located in the Kruununhaka (Kronohagen) neighborhood, the museum has free admission and is open May through September, Wednesday through Sunday - check current hours before visiting. Staff are happy to share the ghost stories if you ask.
The stone sits fenced off in the courtyard between the property's two yellow wooden houses.
Since the courtyard is shared with a daycare center, make sure to close the street-facing gate behind you.
