Every March 17th, people around the world don green and raise a glass, but few pause to ask: Who was the man behind the shamrock? Patrick’s story reads less like a saint’s biography and more like an adventure epic—a Roman-British teenager kidnapped by Irish pirates, sold into slavery, who escaped after years tending livestock on a windswept hillside, only to return voluntarily to the very island that had imprisoned him.
He claimed God spoke to him in dreams. He wrote in a Latin so rough and unpolished that scholars find it endearing, the voice of a man more missionary than intellectual. The snakes he banished were almost certainly never literal; the shamrock he used to explain the Trinity may be entirely made up. And yet the myths layered over this man are as rich as the island he transformed.
