About

Found in the oldest city in the United States, the Lightner Museum is a monument to the grandeur and eccentricity of the Gilded Age. Housed in the former Alcazar Hotel, built in 1888 by railroad magnate Henry Flagler, the museum is an architectural marvel. With its Spanish Renaissance Revival style, the building is as much a work of art as its treasures. Visitors can stroll through opulent ballrooms, a grand indoor pool turned exhibition space, and tranquil courtyards that whisper tales of the past.

The museum's collection is a delightful assortment of fine and decorative arts, boasting everything from Tiffany glass and toasters to mechanical musical instruments and tandem bicycles. Each room feels like stepping into a different world, with eclectic displays that keep you on your toes. One minute, you're marvelling at typewriters; the next, you're startled by the lifelike gaze of a taxidermied chicken in a vending machine.

Apart from the visual feast, the Lightner Museum offers a journey back in time. The Alcazar Hotel was a hotspot for the elite during its heyday, offering amenities like a casino, Turkish baths, and the world's largest indoor swimming pool. Today, visitors can explore these spaces, imagining the lavish parties and luxurious lifestyles of a bygone era. The museum's atmosphere, with its faint echoes of clinking glasses and distant strains of waltz music, is both eerie and enchanting.
