About
The Vagina Museum is the brainchild of science communicator Florence Schechter, who noticed that there is a penis museum in Iceland but no similar museum for vaginas anywhere in the world. Seeking to bring more corresponding scientific and cultural attention to women, she founded this museum initially as a pop-up space across Britain. Its first permanent location opened in 2019, and it moved to its current premises in Bethnal Green in 2023.
Today, the Vagina Museum houses both temporary and permanent exhibits on vaginal health and art. It also discusses stigma surrounding the vagina, especially in sex education, and activists' efforts to address it. As such, the museum seeks to be more than just a quirky attraction like the Phallological Museum and actually bring awareness to social issues.
