Joined Atlas Obscura in 2021

I'm a geologist by training and have taught at the University of Nevada, Reno. I've lived most of my life in the US west and currently reside outside Reno, Nevada. I like hiking and exploring 4wd roads, and continue to check out lots of out-of-the-way spots. A disclaimer: the infelicities in the text on a number of the places I've submitted are due to Atlas Obscura's editing. In case anyone's wondering, my avatar is a picture of Fissure Ridge, a volcanic eruptive center about 15 miles west of Gabbs, Nevada. In addition, more of my travels can be found at the Ipernity photo-sharing site:

Places I've been

Places this traveler has marked as been there.

Lava capping sandstone toward the north end of the park.

St. George, Utah

Snow Canyon State Park

Although it also features red, orange, and variegated cliffs of Navajo Sandstone, this state park is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor.

Looking due east across the crater; vehicle for scale.

Duckwater, Nevada

Meteorite Crater

Despite the name, it's unclear if this small depression in northern Nye County was actually caused by falling space debris.

Fins and weirder shapes.

Bunkerville, Nevada

Little Finland

Harder layers in colorful sandstone weather out as prominent ā€œfins" and even more intricate and bizarre shapes.

The smelter chimney with the portal running into the trench below.

Hiko, Nevada

Crescent Mill

A remarkably well-preserved brick chimney from a smelter dating to the 1860s is all that remains of this former mill.

Oatman Donkey Town

Oatman, Arizona

Oatman

This once-booming Gold Rush town is now home to a herd of feral donkeys.

Close-up of coarse spoil in Sinnamon Cut.

Bridgeport, California

This trench, some 2,300 feet long, is only the most prominent relic of a largely forgotten episode of placer mining on the east slope of the Sierra Nevada.

Close-up of elaborate petroglyphs by campground.

Austin, Nevada

Hickison Summit

This rest area is also home to a remarkable petroglyph site.

Incised channel in Water Gap. Note culverts. Looking downstream.

Lund, Nevada

Named after an outlaw who used the basin as a hideout.

Extraterrestrial Highway Sign

Rachel, Nevada
