As winter approaches and the days grow shorter, icy installations gain new appeal. They shine and reflect what light there is, helping us through the darker seasons and brightening the cold days.
In Japan, a cave near Mt. Fuji is filled with dangling icicles and ice pillars. In Wisconsin, a local plumber has rigged an installation to create unique frozen sculptures. At McMurdo Station in Antarctica, researchers can descend beneath the ice to see the wildlife and frigid ocean below. And in Luleå, Sweden, a series of ice roads are plowed annually to permit access to an archipelago.
Some of these destinations are short-lived, and vanish when the weather turns. Others grow and contract with the seasons. But all of them are worth exploring.
