About

Perstorp's vinegar is a staple of Swedish kitchens, and most Swedes recognize its glass bottle. In 1881, the factory in Perstorp began producing acetic acid using raw materials from the area's beech forests.

In this small town in southern Sweden, a nearly 16-foot (5-meter) concrete bottle copies the classic glass one, right down to the red cap and the label. It stands beside a main road leading into the town center as a local symbol of Perstorp's vinegar-making past.

The bottle was unveiled in 1994 with music and a speech by well-known television chef Jan Boris-Möller, who used the occasion to explain how vinegar can soften an eggshell enough to squeeze an egg into a bottle.

Laminated panels on the bottle give a cucumber-pickling tip and list places to visit in the municipality, all in Swedish.
